Omega-3
Omega-3 essential fatty acids can only be obtained through diets and supplements. These beneficial fats are found in fatty fish, free-range eggs, and the meat and milk of pasture-fed cows.
Omega-3s provide protection against a wide range of conditions involving our cardiovascular, emotional, immune and neurological systems.
There is very good evidence that having the correct balance of omega-3 fatty acids vs omega-6 fatty acids is a contributor to maintaining healthy blood pressure and preventing the accumulation of triglycerides (blood fats), which lead to hardened arteries. In addition, omega-3s may help provide protection against heart arrhythmias and blood clots.
Omega-3s have important effects in the brain, which is largely made up of fat. Correct amounts of DHA, an important essential fatty acid, affect serious mental health problems such as depression and bipolar disorder, as well as more general issues with memory and attention span.
In addition, omega-3s have important effects on inflammatory conditions and other immune system issues, such as asthma and allergies.
If you are one of the millions of Americans who are currently taking medication for high blood pressure, I have some good news. You might be able to reduce the amount of drugs you’re taking or gradually do away with them altogether. Now, you could be thinking, “Why would I want to stop taking blood […]
Do you prepare for visits to your heart doctor? …or do you just show up and wing it? I hope you answered “yes” to the first question because having a dialogue with your doctor shows that you are interested in participating in your health care and you realize that your time together can be an educational […]
They say it’s hell getting old. And while I’m not sure who “they” are, even though there are a lot of wonderful aspects of life in our later years, I can tell you that getting older is not without its fair share of challenges as well. One of them is a phenomenon called sarcopenia. Like […]
Today, I’d like to talk to you about a touchy subject—how emotional health affects your physical health. In Western medicine, doctors are trained to separate mind and body, when the two are inseparable. In fact, treating emotional difficulties very often improves physical ailments dramatically. That’s what happened with a reader we’ll call Brian. After several […]
Perhaps you’ve heard of bisphenol-A (BPA), a chemical compound found in plastic bottles and packaging and in the linings of food and drink cans. Even if you haven’t heard of it, you have most definitely been exposed to it. In fact, more than 92 percent of people ages 6 and older have detectable levels of […]
For a long time, the medical and pharmaceutical industries having been wanting us to believe that the best way to deal with cardiovascular disease (CVD) is to take a cocktail of heart drugs and to regularly see a cardiologist. (Since procedures and surgeries may be needed, after all). But now, a supplement that has been […]
For years, no one could explain Alzheimer’s disease. It didn’t seem to bear a link to other problems. There was no relationship to location or environment. Certain families might suffer from increased prevalence—but there was little rhyme or reason to who or when it struck. Then in 2005 came the eureka moment. A study out […]
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a disease of the nervous system where the immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys myelin. Myelin is a protective sheath that acts in the same way that plastic covers protect electrical cords…except myelin covers your nerve fibers. As the myelin is destroyed, it causes miscommunications between the brain and the rest […]
Anxiety, depression, and other mental health challenges have grown to epidemic levels worldwide. But they’re more prevalent in the US than in any other country in the world. Both genetics and environmental factors undoubtedly are involved in this complicated issue, but the modern Western diet is another big factor. Elements of this diet not only […]
You may remember when joggers were considered a little, well, weird. Why run anywhere just to run back to the beginning, sweaty, breathless, and heart pounding? That dismissive attitude was held decades ago, but many joggers ignored it and kept moving. Researchers recently got to wondering how the health of multi-decade joggers—and other long-term exercisers—compared […]
