Prostate Problems

The prostate plays a vital role in male sexual health, affecting fertility and pleasure. This gland surrounds the urethra just below the bladder and when enlarged, can affect the flow of urine and semen into the penis.

As you age, your prostate may enlarge, a condition called benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH), which can disrupt your normal bladder function, causing more frequent or less complete urination. Exercise and proper nutrition are two of the most important precautions you can take for maintaining proper prostate health. Focus on a wide assortment of fruits and vegetables and get your lean protein from grains like quinoa, wild-caught fish, and lean poultry. Make sure to include plenty of cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, bok choi, brussels sprouts, cabbage) in your diet to defend against cancer.

Prostate cancer is the most common form of cancer for men. While the PSA test is used as an important screening tool, it is not and never was intended as a diagnosis for cancer. At my medical clinic, we use cutting edge tests for PCA3 gene expression (PCA3 is found in 95% of prostate cancers) and color Doppler ultrasound instead of painful and inaccurate prostate biopsies for diagnosis.

At the root of both BPH and prostate cancer is deadly inflammation. Saw palmetto, stinging nettle, and zinc are other common approaches to BPH.
