Prostate Problems
The prostate plays a vital role in male sexual health, affecting fertility and pleasure. This gland surrounds the urethra just below the bladder and when enlarged, can affect the flow of urine and semen into the penis.
As you age, your prostate may enlarge, a condition called benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH), which can disrupt your normal bladder function, causing more frequent or less complete urination. Exercise and proper nutrition are two of the most important precautions you can take for maintaining proper prostate health. Focus on a wide assortment of fruits and vegetables and get your lean protein from grains like quinoa, wild-caught fish, and lean poultry. Make sure to include plenty of cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, bok choi, brussels sprouts, cabbage) in your diet to defend against cancer.
Prostate cancer is the most common form of cancer for men. While the PSA test is used as an important screening tool, it is not and never was intended as a diagnosis for cancer. At my medical clinic, we use cutting edge tests for PCA3 gene expression (PCA3 is found in 95% of prostate cancers) and color Doppler ultrasound instead of painful and inaccurate prostate biopsies for diagnosis.
At the root of both BPH and prostate cancer is deadly inflammation. Saw palmetto, stinging nettle, and zinc are other common approaches to BPH.
There is a white, waxy, naturally occurring substance found in many whole foods, including vegetables, nuts, seeds, and legumes that shows tremendous promise both for its ability to lower cholesterol (in studies it was just as effective as statins) AND reverse benign prostatic hyperplasia. It’s inexpensive, easy to find and works wonders without a single side effect. Get the whole story here.
Daily intake of “superfoods” can have a profoundly positive impact on your health. And today I want to show you something that’s both a superfood and adaptogen—something that’s been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for thousands of years to decrease inflammation, fight anxiety, boost your immune system, help lull you to sleep and much more. But right now science is turning its attention to this “wonder fungus” because of its ability to fight prostate cancer.
If you’re struggling with ED, first understand that you’re not alone. Although I know it’s embarrassing to talk about, my suggestion is that you visit your doctor and ask them to test you for two things: your heart function and your hormone levels. Erectile dysfunction can actually be a strong warning sign of blood vessel dilation problems […]
Here are three words pretty much guaranteed to scare an adult male: Erectile…dysfunction…incontinence. Unfortunately, these have been all too common side effects of the all too common prostate cancer interventions—radiation, chemo, and surgery. No disrespect for practitioners here—many considered these the best options available. But today, I offer gentlemen three words that change everything: 100 […]
An American man has a 16% lifetime risk of prostate cancer—not quite one in six. Though the risk of dying of prostate cancer is only 2.9 percent, it’s still the second leading cause of cancer death among American men, after lung cancer. So there’s recent concern about significant declines in: The number of men taking […]
Men, when was the last time your doctor discussed your hormones with you? Maybe they tested your testosterone levels, but that’s just one piece of an intricate hormonal puzzle that exists in your body. Testosterone may be the largest piece of the puzzle, but without the other pieces to make it whole, you don’t have […]
I’d like to share with you the results of recent research linking pain and inflammation with a problem that’s all too common these days – low levels of the hormone testosterone. The study, which reviewed the results of nearly 100 previous clinical trials, found that lack of testosterone is linked to chronic pain and inflammation. […]
Very few days go by without me seeing a patient who is concerned about his prostate. And who can blame them? During the next few years, I expect to see cases of prostate cancer continue to increase, until the disease achieves the dubious distinction of being the number one cancer among men. Yet, in spite […]
Reggie had been a patient of mine for more than a decade, until he moved out of the area. So you can imagine how surprised I was to see him in the exam room one day. It turned out, Reggie had been having prostate problems, starting with a PSA test that had risen from 1.9 to […]
